London Assurance is a comedic play in five acts written by Dion L. Boucicault and first published in 1841. The play is set in London in the early 19th century and follows the story of Sir Harcourt Courtly, a wealthy and vain gentleman who is determined to marry a young woman named Grace Harkaway. However, Grace is not interested in Sir Harcourt and instead falls in love with Charles Courtly, Sir Harcourt's son.The play is filled with mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and witty dialogue. It satirizes the upper class of London society and their obsession with wealth and status. Along with the central love triangle, there are several subplots involving other characters, such as Lady Gay Spanker, a flirtatious and outspoken woman who is married to a jealous and insecure husband.London Assurance was a popular play in its time and has been revived several times over the years. It is considered one of Boucicault's most successful works and a classic example of Victorian comedy.
