Seventeen-year-old Edi Barschewski is president of her senior class and a three- time All-Conference and All-State athlete in both volleyball and basketball. She has led both teams to two state titles and won the hearts of her entire community. But her world is crumbling. It is the summer before her senior year and her mother, terminally ill with cancer, chooses to reject chemotherapy and live out her last days in the familiarity of her own home. Edi, an only child of an only child, has no other family but her father, a retired NBA legend she hardly knows, for he lives a world away in Malibu, California.Kentucky-born and raised just as her mother and father were, Edi is determined to finish her senior year in her hometown. She feels her father, Stanley Othello Barschewski (the S.O.B.) robbed her of seventeen years, so the least he can give her is one. What Edi doesn't know is that, once Stanley leaves his Malibu home and business to grudgingly devote his life to her for one year, she's adopting a whole new set of problems. Not only must she deal with the hateful words of Stanley's evil wife, who blames Edi for luring Stanley to Kentucky and breaking up her marriage, she also falls victim of violent harassment from one of Stanley's former teammates, Casey Ward, a man who is guilty of a hit-and-run homicide in which Stanley was a passenger. Paranoid Stanley will testify against him, Ward administers several scare tactics on both Stanley and Edi. Eventually Edi learns Stanley blames himself for the hit-and-run and that he has a darker side than she had ever imagined.
