The MacDermots of Ballycloran is a novel written by Anthony Trollope in 1847. It tells the story of a family living in the small Irish village of Ballycloran in the mid-19th century. The patriarch of the MacDermot family, Thady, is a poor and uneducated landowner who is struggling to keep his estate afloat. His son, Feemy, is in love with a local man named Harry, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that Harry is a Protestant and Feemy is a Catholic. As the story unfolds, tensions rise between the MacDermots and their neighbors, who are resentful of their land ownership and the privileges it affords them. Thady becomes embroiled in a dispute with his tenants over rent payments, and Feemy's relationship with Harry is threatened by the interference of her father and the local priest. The novel explores themes of class, religion, and family loyalty against the backdrop of a changing Ireland. Trollope's vivid descriptions of the landscape and the people of Ballycloran bring the story to life, and his sympathetic portrayal of the MacDermot family makes this a moving and engaging read. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
