Este libro establece un diálogo entre ejemplos de obras de arte y textos literarios puertorriqueños para analizar las significaciones de variadas representaciones de la maternidad. Las (des)conexiones entre ambos espacios creativos identifican en el cuerpo materno aspectos de la historia nacional. Los ejemplos de arte y literatura reflejan maneras en que la esclavitud, el colonialismo y las vivencias en la diáspora tienden a categorizar, controlar e intervenir en las relaciones maternofiliales, incluyendo el embarazo y el parto. No obstante, según Guzmán Zavala para describir estas experiencias hace falta considerar un verbo que abarque maternidades otras. Este texto demuestra que en la zona entre texto e imagen se esconden secretos pertinentes a prácticas que permanecen silenciadas y en ocasiones expresan el disgusto y la abyección en su lucha por la visibilidad.
This book establishes a dialogue between examples of Puerto Rican works of art and literary texts to analyse the meanings of various representations of motherhood. The (dis)connections between both creative spaces identify aspects of national history in the maternal body. Examples from art and literature reflect ways in which slavery, colonialism, and experiences in the diaspora tend to categorise, control, and intervene in mother-child relationships, including pregnancy and childbirth. However, according to Guzmán Zavala, in order to describe these experiences it is necessary to consider a discourse that encompasses other maternities. This text demonstrates that there are hidden secrets in the space between text and image which are related to practices that remain silenced and which sometimes, express disgust and misery in their struggle for visibility.
