The libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti, after François-Benoît Hoffman's Mathilde, inspired by Jacques Cazotte's novel. The opera tells the story of the misanthropic and misogynistic Donnaraldo di Shabran, whose castle is invaded by a group of travelers seeking shelter from a storm. Among them is the captivating Matilde, whose beauty and spirit gradually melt the iron heart of Shabran.
First performed in Rome in 1821, Matilde Di Shabran showcases Rossini's brilliant comedic style, characterized by sparkling melodies, intricate ensembles, and rapid-fire patter songs.
