This story follows Max Sterling, a quiet, overlooked boy whose life changes completely when he discovers Ignis, an iridescent dragon no bigger than his thumb, which he hides in a custom-sewn jacket pocket. Max struggles to maintain the secret, dealing with Ignis's need for charcoal and honey, constant heat, and tendency to emit puffs of smoke. The secret explodes at the annual Pine Ridge Summer Fair when the sugary air from a gigantic, neon pink cotton candy sculpture triggers a massive, uncontrolled fiery sneeze from the pocket-sized dragon. This single, colossal blast instantly vaporizes lemonade, severs balloon strings, and melts the five-foot-tall candy centerpiece, causing momentary chaos. To Max's surprise, the fair manager, Mr. Henderson, simply advises Max to keep Ignis away from sugar and post-nasal drip, cementing Max's newfound status as the boy with the Pocket Inferno, finally seeing him and his tiny companion celebrated rather than feared or ignored
