Memoir of Alexander Gordon is an autobiographical account written by Alexander Gordon himself and published in 1846. The book is a detailed narration of the life and experiences of the author, who was a Scottish physician and medical writer. Gordon was born in 1752 and lived through a period of great change in Scotland, including the Jacobite rebellions and the Enlightenment. The book covers Gordon's upbringing in Aberdeenshire, his education, and his decision to become a physician. It also describes his experiences as a doctor in Edinburgh, where he witnessed the devastating effects of the smallpox epidemic of 1782. Gordon's account of the epidemic is particularly vivid, as he was one of the few doctors who continued to treat patients despite the risk of contracting the disease himself. In addition to his medical work, Gordon was also an accomplished writer and scholar. The book includes excerpts from his letters, essays, and other writings, as well as his observations on the cultural and political climate of his time. He was a friend of many of the leading figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, including David Hume and Adam Smith.Overall, Memoir of Alexander Gordon provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of a prominent Scottish physician and writer during a period of great social and cultural change. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of medicine, Scottish history, or the Enlightenment. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
