On September 25, 1978, flight PSA 182 crashed in San Diego, killing everyone on board and several people on the ground. A few miles up the road, the Chargers were introducing Don Coryell as their new head coach in the sort of bizarre timing usually seen only in Hollywood action thrillers. As for Coryell, no one cared about him, given the tragedy of the crash.

That would be the last day that no one would care about Don Coryell.

Part 2 of the history of the San Diego Chargers covers the Air Coryell era, 1978-1986. Under Coryell, the Chargers were inches close from the Super Bowl in three seasons.
