THE mulatto, as the term is used in this study, includes all those members of the Negro race with a visible mixture of white blood. Thus used, the word is a general term to include all Negroes of mixed ancestry regardless of the degree of inter-mixture. It includes all persons who are recognized, in the communities in which they live, as being of mixed blood. It is in this sense that the word is most widely used and best understood in this country.
