Evie, the Countess of Woodridge, has her first official case as a married woman. Her business partner, Lotte Mannering, has received an anonymous letter claiming the recently deceased Lord Benning was murdered and his widow, Lady Benning, is responsible not only for his death but also for the death of his first wife.

Evie and Tom are both eager to investigate the matter as it means traveling to the north of England and leaving behind their visiting relatives as well as the mayhem reigning over Halton House.
