Set during the First World War, the novel follows Christopher Tietjens, an English gentleman and army officer struggling to maintain order-both bureaucratic and moral-amid the chaos of the Western Front. Stationed in France, Tietjens confronts not only military inefficiency and class tension but also the unresolved personal turmoil of his marriage to Sylvia and his attachment to Valentine Wannop.
