Ageing comedian Jack Corsac used to be a household name. With his fame now a thing of the past, Corsac is forced to work in sleazy comedy clubs just to make ends meet. Unable to take any more, he quits on stage and seeks the help of his estranged daughter, Sam, to recover what he once had. When Sam arranges for Corsac to host a game show, he leaps at the chance and a new career path opens before him. Corsac's jokes and former fame make Deadlock an instant success and the show is quickly moved to a prime-time slot. It is on the show he discovers his greatest fan - his glamorous assistant Liz Henderson. Similarly aged, Sam and Liz instantly dislike one another, yet both have Corsac's best interests at heart. Blinded by his renewed fame, Corsac begins an affair with Liz which threatens to destroy his family. Along with Liz comes further trouble, for a jealous ex-boyfriend stalks her and discovers her secret. Trying to prevent his family from learning the truth, Corsac knows if he breaks off the affair, his show will be cancelled. With Sam suspicious of the truth and the unstable ex-boyfriend making threats, Corsac finds he must re-evaluate his life and decide what is truly important to him. Corsac wants it all; but, as his famous catchphrase goes, it's simply not gonna happen.
