Penelope's Suitors is a novel written by Edwin Lassetter Bynner. The story revolves around Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, who is left alone in Ithaca for twenty years while her husband is away at war. During this time, many suitors come to her palace, hoping to win her hand in marriage and claim Odysseus' throne. She weaves a shroud for her father-in-law, claiming that she will choose a suitor once it is finished, but secretly unravels her work every night. She also challenges the suitors to a contest, promising to marry the man who can string Odysseus' bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axe heads. Meanwhile, Odysseus is on his way home, encountering many obstacles and challenges along the way. When he finally returns to Ithaca, he disguises himself as a beggar and enters his own palace, where he witnesses the suitors' greed and disrespect for Penelope. With the help of his son Telemachus, Odysseus eventually reveals his true identity and defeats the suitors in a bloody battle. Penelope's Suitors is a retelling of Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, from a different perspective. It explores themes of loyalty, love, and the consequences of greed and arrogance.
