The People of the Mist is an adventure novel written by H. Rider Haggard. The story is set in Central America and follows the journey of a group of adventurers who are seeking an ancient lost city called Kr. The group is led by Leonard Outram, a British lawyer who is in love with a woman named Stella. Along with his friend, the hunter Jeffries, and a group of native guides, they set out on a perilous journey through the jungle. As they travel deeper into the jungle, they encounter the mysterious People of the Mist, a tribe of people who have never been seen by outsiders before. The tribe is ruled by a beautiful queen named Nyleptha, who is said to be immortal. Outram and his companions are welcomed into the tribe, but soon discover that there is a dark secret behind their immortality. The story is full of action, adventure, and romance, as the group faces many dangers and obstacles on their quest to find Kr. Along the way, they encounter hostile tribes, treacherous terrain, and deadly animals. They also discover the truth about Nyleptha and her people, and must decide whether to stay and help them or leave them to their fate.Overall, The People of the Mist is a thrilling adventure novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. It is a classic example of Haggard's work, with vivid descriptions of exotic locations, exciting action sequences, and memorable characters. The dwarf saluted and went. Ah! he said to himself as he waddled down the hill where he hoped to find game, ah! you do not fear men dead or living--overmuch; yet, Otter, it is true that you are better here in the sun, though the sun is hot, than yonder in the cave. Say, Otter, why does Baas Tom look so awful now that he is dead--he who was so gentle while yet he lived? Cheat did not look awful, only uglier. But then you killed Cheat, and the Heavens killed Baas Tom and set their own seal upon him. And what will Baas Leonard do now that his brother is dead and the Basutos have run away? This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
