Pere Goriot is a novel by French author Honore de Balzac, first published in 1835. The story is set in Paris in the early 19th century and follows the lives of several characters, including the titular character, a retired vermicelli maker named Jean-Joachim Goriot. Goriot has sacrificed everything for his two daughters, who are both married to wealthy men but treat him with contempt. The novel explores themes of social mobility, greed, and the corrupting influence of money and power. The other characters include a young law student named Eugene de Rastignac, who becomes involved with a wealthy socialite named Delphine de Nucingen, and a criminal named Vautrin who attempts to manipulate and control them all. Balzac's writing style is known for its realism and attention to detail, and Pere Goriot is considered one of his most important works.
