For the November 2019 issue of Phenomenal Stories, we pay tribute to the man who fathered the Golden Age of Science Fiction. John W. Champbell Jr. had his flaws, but when he took the helm at Astounding Stories in October 1937, the world was about to change. Over the next few years, modern science fiction was born with writers such as Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and A.E. van Vogt. Plus, of course, we have other great fiction and non-fiction from some of the usual suspects, including J.D. Hayes-Canell and Richard H. Nilsen. We continue the classic and only Conan novel, 'Hour of the Dragon, by Robert E. Howard, and the strange early scientific novel, 'Girl in the Golden Atom' by Ray Cummings. Phenomenal Stories is a tribute to the speculative pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s, such as Weird Tales, Amazing Stories and Astounding Science Fiction. Shawn M. Tomlinson serves as editor.
