A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful is Edmund Burke's classic eighteenth-century study of taste, beauty, terror, imagination, and aesthetic experience. Burke separates the beautiful from the sublime, arguing that beauty is associated with qualities such as smoothness, delicacy, harmony, and pleasure, while the sublime arises from vastness, obscurity, danger, power, terror, and the mind's response to overwhelming force. The result is one of the foundational texts in modern aesthetics and a major influence on later Romantic thought.
First published in 1756, with a substantially expanded second edition in 1757, Burke's Enquiry helped shift aesthetic theory away from purely classical rules and toward the psychological and emotional effects of art, nature, language, and perception. Project Gutenberg's text notes that the first edition appeared in 1756 and that the second edition, with large additions, appeared in 1757.
