It's interesting to note that they were considered a lost civilization until archeologists and etymologists discovered ancient writings from Phoenicia that revealed vital information about the civilization. They existed from 1500-300 B.C. influencing what would be the origins of maritime trade. The Phoenicians would establish colonies through riches and territories gained through maritime trade and wished one of their trading cities to be a formidable enemy to Ancient Rome.
Their name Phoenicia is believed to come from the Greeks referencing the purple dye that they specialized in that was highly coveted. The alphabet and trading tactics of the Phoenicians influenced the Greeks, Egyptians, and other ancient civilizations around them almost as much as their trade did.
