The Pirates of Penzance or The Slave of Duty is a comic opera written by W.S. Gilbert and composed by Arthur Sullivan. The story follows a young man named Frederic, who was mistakenly apprenticed to a group of pirates until his 21st birthday. Upon his release, he falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General. However, complications arise when Frederic discovers that he was born on February 29th, and therefore technically only has a birthday every four years. This means that he is still bound to the pirates until he is 84 years old. The opera is filled with witty dialogue, catchy songs, and absurd situations that poke fun at Victorian-era society.
