Policing in the United Kingdom is structured separately in each of the legal systems. Law enforcement is carried out by police officers under the jurisdiction of one of the regional police services. Police officers are granted certain powers so that they can perform their duties. They are responsible for safeguarding life and property, conserving peace, and detecting and deterring criminal offences.
