O cérebro é uma máquina extraordinária, talvez a mais complexa conhecida pelo homem. Ele guia o pensamento, as emoções, o movimento. No entanto, o cérebro não é a mente. O que chamamos de mente parece ir além do puro funcionamento dos neurónios. A mente não é apenas mecânica. É algo que vive de associações, memórias e sonhos - uma dimensão intangível que escapa à definição, mas que reconhecemos como a nossa essência.

E depois há a consciência. A consciência não é cérebro nem mente. Então, o que é a consciência? É uma ideia que fascina filósofos e cientistas há milénios. Para alguns, a consciência coincide com os impulsos químicos e elétricos no cérebro. Para outros, é o mistério mais profundo da natureza, algo que a ciência não consegue descrever por completo. O filósofo Descartes, no século XVII, sugeriu uma distinção radical entre mente e corpo: Penso, logo existo. Mas pensar ainda não significa compreender. A verdadeira origem da consciência permanece indescritível.
No século XX, cientistas como o físico Roger Penrose e o anestesista Stuart Hameroff levantaram uma questão ainda mais surpreendente. A consciência poderia ter a ver com a física quântica? As suas ideias poderiam mudar para sempre a forma como interpretamos o nosso lugar no universo. Segundo eles, processos quânticos podem ocorrer dentro dos microtúbulos neuronais no cérebro, sugerindo que a consciência não é apenas um produto biológico, mas um fenómeno que se entrelaça com as leis fundamentais do universo.
Imaginemos por um momento: se eles estivessem certos, isso significaria que a consciência não está apenas aqui, na nossa mente, mas está ligada a algo maior, talvez à própria estrutura do cosmos. Poderia existir uma rede invisível que conecta as mentes de todos os seres vivos? Ou talvez a consciência seja uma porta que os nossos cérebros tornam acessível, mas que existe independentemente de nós? Talvez o nosso cérebro seja uma antena receptora conectada a uma consciência universal?
A diferença entre cérebro, mente e consciência é o que dá origem a estas questões. O cérebro é físico, tangível. É uma rede complexa de células e energia. A mente é mais subtil - é imaterial, mas evidente. A consciência, por outro lado, é o grande mistério: é o sentir que nos permite estar conscientes do que vivemos. Por fim, a consciência quântica amplia ainda mais o horizonte, empurrando a fronteira para o infinito.
Mas esta história feita de ciência e filosofia não é apenas uma questão moderna. Os Chandogya Upanishad, antigos textos hindus, escrevem: Todo o universo está dentro do ser, e o ser é o universo.
Ainda hoje, neurocientistas, físicos e pensadores continuam este diálogo. Carl Sagan afirma: O cérebro humano é o objeto mais complexo e organizado do universo conhecido.
Este livro parte da anatomia do cérebro para descobrir as maravilhas do seu funcionamento. Seguindo a narrativa, investigaremos a mente: como nasce?
