This book presents the proceedings of the naval court martial in the case of Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, a commander in the Navy of the United States, including the charges and specifications of charges preferred against him by the Secretary of the Navy. Mackenzie was court martialed for his actions in the Somers Affair, a mysterious incident which occurred aboard the brig USS Somers in 1842 and resulted in the execution of three crew members. Cooper, a friend of Mackenzie, defended him during the trial. This historical document sheds light on a controversial episode in American naval history.
