Incognita or Love and Duty Reconciled is a play written by William Congreve, an English dramatist who was famous for his witty and satirical comedies. The play was first performed in 1692 and tells the story of two lovers, Dorimant and Incognita, who are separated by their duty to their families. Dorimant is a wealthy and fashionable man-about-town who is engaged to a wealthy heiress, Clarinda. However, he falls in love with Incognita, a mysterious and beautiful woman whom he meets at a masquerade ball. Incognita is actually Melantha, the daughter of a nobleman who is engaged to another man, but she is determined to be with Dorimant. The play follows the twists and turns of their romance as they navigate the demands of their families and society. Congreve's play explores themes of love, duty, and social class, and is known for its clever dialogue and intricate plot. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
