Rachel: A Play in Three Acts by Angelina Weld Grimké is one of the earliest known plays written by an African American woman and one of the first to openly confront the realities of racism in the United States. First performed in 1916 and published in 1920, this groundbreaking work was originally written as a response to D. W. Griffith's racist film The Birth of a Nation and was intended to awaken national awareness of the cruelty of racial prejudice.
