Our red brains and blue brains have divided us as a society in ways that are hurting many if not most of us. The divisions are affecting not only the world around us today - which is growing increasingly precarious, and even frightening - but the world tomorrow, in ways that threaten the futures of our children and grandchildren.

How can we heal these divisions, and become a united people?

We can't fix anything until we identify the core problem. We can't heal our society until we have correctly identified the disease.

The problem is not our red brains and blue brains. The point has been made repeatedly in the previous volumes of this series that our red and blue brains are perfectly natural - we couldn't do anything about them if we tried. There will always be cognitive variety in human communities, bestowing differing worldviews - and this is ultimately not just a good thing, but an essential feature that enriches us all.

The problem is partisanism itself. The fact that we have chosen to segregate our society based on our political leanings is the source of our dysfunction.

Bridging the abyss that separates us today means pulling away from the red and blue worldviews that have prevailed for so long, to such detrimental effect, and moving back toward purple: we are all part red and part blue, in some measure, and both parts are of a piece with our humanity.

What stands between us now and that more united future, and how we might build the bridges that get us there, are the subjects of this final entry in the series.
