Islam experienced blossoming as well as waning. The Book of Allah transformed a tribal culture into an empire. The ascent of the umma was triggered by following revelation. The descent was prompted by a return from revelation to tradition. The turn was expedited by the repression of reason. The turn was buttressed by the recording of the traditions. To justify the turn, tradition was treated as revelation. It even became a root of legislation. Tradition surpassed revelation. The turn represented a reorientation from an Allah-centric to a prophet-centric paradigm. The turn was assisted by the repression of reason. The repression of reason subordinated reason to tradition in the exegesis of revelation. The reluctance to use reason prevented jurists from understanding revelation. The misunderstanding of revelation prevented the umma from following revelation. Accordingly, the umma turned to tradition. The reluctance to engage reason triggered confusion and corrupted the knowledge of revelation. The reluctance to engage reasoning also corrupted the sharia. The repression of reason eroded the umma's power to reflect. The repression of reasoning closed the Muslim mind. The corruption of knowledge is reflected in the proliferation of punishments unwarranted by revelation, for example for adultery and apostasy. The proclivity to extremism is reflected in the treatment of terrorism as martyrdom by wayward ulama. The repression of reason, in particular the teaching of causality, plunged umma into stagnation. The rejection of reason was justified by portraying the use of reason to understand revelation as kufr. But Allah exhorts us to use reason to understand revelation. The rejection of reason defies revelation. The repression to reasoning culminated in the persecution of thinkers by Musa al-Hadi in 786. The murder of five-thousand philosophers preceded the Reign of Terror of the Jacobins and Maximilien Robespierre in the French Revolution by a millennium. Sixteen thousand followers of tradition were beheaded with the arrival of the Age of Reason. Their reluctance to use reason to understand revelation prevented exegetes from understanding revelation. Accordingly, they asserted - in defiance of its teaching - that revelation features ambiguous verses. The perception that revelation is unclear reflects kufr in all verses that teach that the Book if clear. The corruption of the knowledge of revelation dues to the reluctance to use reason prevented the umma from following revelation, estranged the umma from its way of life. It also triggered a misunderstanding of terms as mutashabihat, hikma, and hawa. As a result of misunderstanding revelation, Muslims turned to tradition, which replaced reason as the methodology of understanding revelation. To justify the treatment of tradition as fit to explain revelation, tradition was treated as revelation. As a result, tradition merged with revelation. Furthermore, the treatment of tradition as a judge of revelation reversed the relation of revelation and tradition. The revelation of Allah would be judged by traditions. This was shirk. The designation of tradition as revelation transformed Islam into traditional Islam. The abrogation of the verses of reconciliation by the ayah as-sayf transformed Islam into Islamism. It is necessary to restore revelation to its pre-eminence in relation to tradition, to rehabilitate reason, and to ensure that all legislation is in accord with revelation. The reluctance to use reason was justified by treating the use of reason in religion as kufr. Refraining from the use of reason made it hard to understand and follow revelation. The repression of reason paved the way for the turn from revelation to tradition. The turn was a paradigm shift from an Allah-centric theological paradigm to a prophet-centric paradigm. The words of men were treated as just as authoritative as, and in a few cases even more authoritative than the words of God.
