The Revenger's Tragedy is a play written by Thomas Middleton, first published in 1607. The play is a dark and violent tragedy set in a corrupt and decadent Italian court. The story follows Vindice, a young man seeking revenge against the Duke for the rape and murder of his betrothed. Vindice plots a series of elaborate schemes and disguises to bring about the Duke's downfall, manipulating the corrupt courtiers and their vices to his advantage. Along the way, he is aided by his brother Hippolito, a loyal servant named Ambitioso, and his sister Castiza, who is forced to navigate the dangerous world of court politics to help her brother. The play explores themes of revenge, corruption, and morality, and features a cast of complex and morally ambiguous characters. The language is rich and poetic, with a mix of elevated and colloquial speech, and the play is known for its graphic violence and dark humor. The Revenger's Tragedy is considered one of Middleton's greatest works and a classic of Jacobean drama.VINDICI And therefore I'll put on that knave for once, And be a right man then, a man a' th' time, For to be honest is not to be i' th' world.
