The Rise and Fall of Starmer and the Labour Party offers an unauthorised, detailed examination of Keir Starmer's journey from his working-class upbringing in Southwark to his tenure as Prime Minister. Born in 1962 to a toolmaker father and a mother living with severe Still's disease, Starmer's early life was shaped by themes of resilience and public service. After attending Reigate Grammar School, he built a prominent legal career, specialising in human rights, and co-founded Doughty Street Chambers, where he worked on cases involving the death penalty and policing reform.
Starmer served as Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2013, overseeing high-profile cases including the Stephen Lawrence murder trial and the phone-hacking scandal, while also facing scrutiny over failures to prosecute grooming gangs. His approach as DPP was often described as meticulous and principled by supporters, though some critics argued it could be overly cautious in high-stakes decisions. Elected MP for Holborn and St Pancras in 2015, he later became Labour leader in 2020 and Prime Minister in 2024. As Labour leader, Starmer's leadership style was seen as pragmatic and disciplined, winning praise for rebuilding party unity but also provoking debate about his willingness to compromise on key policies.
The book explores the controversies surrounding his rise, including undeclared campaign funding linked to Labour Together, the 2024 gifts scandal, and declining public support reflected in Labour's internal polling. It also examines the wider political landscape, including the growth of Reform UK and the fallout from Peter Mandelson's dismissal as UK ambassador to the United States following the release of emails relating to Jeffrey Epstein.
