The Rise of Silas Lapham is a novel written by William Dean Howells, first published in 1885. The book tells the story of Silas Lapham, a self-made millionaire from Vermont who moves to Boston with his family in order to further his business interests. Lapham is a man of good character and strong values, but he is also ambitious and determined to succeed in his business ventures. As Lapham becomes more successful, he begins to feel the pressure of his newfound wealth and status. He is torn between his desire to maintain his integrity and his desire to fit in with the upper class society of Boston. Meanwhile, his two daughters, Irene and Penelope, are also struggling to find their place in society. Irene is beautiful and charming, but she is also naive and inexperienced. Penelope is more practical and down-to-earth, but she lacks her sister's social graces. The novel explores themes of social class, wealth, and morality. It also offers a critique of the American Dream and the idea that anyone can achieve success through hard work and determination. Howells portrays Lapham as a sympathetic character who is caught between his desire for success and his desire to do what is right. Ultimately, the novel suggests that true success comes not from material wealth, but from living a life of integrity and virtue.Brought up by nothing but hisself. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
