Roy Blakeley's Adventures in Camp by Percy Keese Fitzhugh is a captivating tale of youthful adventure, camaraderie, and the spirit of scouting. The story follows Roy Blakeley, a scout, and his troop as they embark on a summer journey to Temple Camp using a houseboat loaned to them by a local man, Mr. Donnelle. The narrative begins with the troop's preparations and the challenges they face due to the houseboat's lack of power. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Lieutenant Donnelle, Mr. Donnelle's son, who is in a predicament after a series of misadventures at sea. Roy, embodying the scout's code of loyalty and helpfulness, promises to keep the lieutenant's secret, setting the stage for a series of events that test his resolve and character. Throughout the story, the scouts engage in various activities that highlight their resourcefulness and teamwork. Skinny McCord, a new and underprivileged member of the troop, becomes a focal point as he navigates his way through the challenges of scouting life, driven by his desire to earn merit badges. His interactions with Roy and the other scouts underscore themes of friendship and personal growth. The narrative is rich with humor, particularly through the antics of Pee-wee Harris, and is interspersed with moments of tension and mystery, especially concerning the lieutenant's past and the mysterious newspaper article about fishermen's harrowing adventure. As the scouts make their way up the Hudson River, they learn valuable lessons about trust, responsibility, and the importance of doing good turns.
