Ruddigore Or The Witch's Curse is a comic opera written by William S. Gilbert, first performed in London in 1887. The story follows the cursed Baronets of Ruddigore, who are required to commit a crime every day or face a terrible fate. The current Baronet, Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, rebels against the curse and flees to the countryside, assuming the name Robin Oakapple. He falls in love with a village maiden, Rose Maybud, but his true identity is revealed when his younger brother, Despard, arrives to take up the title of Baronet. Despard has also been living incognito, as a farmer named George, and is engaged to Robin's foster-sister, Mad Margaret. The plot thickens as the ghosts of Sir Ruthven's ancestors come back to life, and the characters must navigate their way through a series of mistaken identities, love triangles, and supernatural occurrences. The opera is known for its catchy tunes, witty lyrics, and satirical take on Victorian society.THIS 32 PAGE ARTICLE WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE BOOK: The Works of Sir William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, by William S.
