Ruy Blas is a play written by Victor Hugo in 1838 and published in 1839. The play is set in 17th century Spain and tells the story of Ruy Blas, a young man who is hired as a servant to the corrupt Duke of Almazn. Ruy Blas falls in love with the Duke's mistress, the beautiful and virtuous Queen Maria de Neubourg, and decides to help her overthrow the Duke and take control of the kingdom. The play explores themes of love, power, corruption, and class struggle. It is often regarded as one of Hugo's most powerful works and has been adapted into numerous films, operas, and stage productions. The 1909 edition of Ruy Blas includes an introduction by the translator, which provides historical context and insight into the play's themes and symbolism. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
