The Austronesian language family counts the Marshallese language (M̧ajol) among its branches. Primarily spoken in the Pacific island nation of the Marshall Islands, it shares official status with English. The Marshall Islands, which consist of 29 coral atolls and 5 islands, are home to approximately 50,000 Marshallese speakers.

- Word Order: Marshallese typically follows a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order.
- Pronouns: There is a distinction between inclusive and exclusive forms of the first-person plural pronoun. This means that when using we, Marshallese speakers differentiate whether the listener is included or excluded.
- Verbs: Marshallese verbs often change form depending on the tense and aspect of the action, with infixes or suffixes used to indicate these changes.
- Marshallese is written in the Latin alphabet, though its orthography was adapted to reflect sounds in the language.
- The orthography includes some unique letters, such as ḷ (a voiced lateral), which is a common sound in Marshallese.
