The aim of this work is to present a critical reflection on the importance of safety as a transversal concept in the teaching, research and extension processes of a university, in this case the Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI). This work is justified by the expected benefits of a strategic administration based on an integrated health, safety, environment, quality and quality of life management model with sustainable results in the human and ethical training of its students, as well as the generation and application of knowledge with social responsibility and the international insertion of the university in terms of safety, supported by certifications such as the OHSAS 18001:2007 and ABNT-NBR 18801:2010 standards. The methodology proposed to UNIFEI based on the requirements of this standard will also meet mandatory legal requirements. The main results of this project could motivate the application of the proposed model in the context of other universities and educational institutions in Brazil.
