Serge Panine is a novel written by Georges Ohnet, originally published in French in 1881. The story revolves around the titular character, Serge Panine, a wealthy Russian businessman who is known for his shrewd business acumen and his ability to manipulate people to get what he wants. However, when he falls in love with a young Frenchwoman named Jacqueline de Nailles, his carefully constructed world begins to unravel.Jacqueline is already engaged to another man, but Serge is determined to win her over. He uses his wealth and influence to try and break up the engagement, but his efforts are complicated by the fact that Jacqueline's fianc is actually his own son from a previous marriage. As the story unfolds, Serge finds himself caught between his love for Jacqueline and his loyalty to his son, leading to a series of dramatic and tragic events.Serge Panine is a classic example of French romantic literature, with its themes of love, betrayal, and family drama. Ohnet's writing is rich and descriptive, painting vivid pictures of both the opulent world of the Russian elite and the more subdued atmosphere of French society. The novel has been widely praised for its complex characters and its exploration of the moral dilemmas faced by those in positions of power and influence.1905. With a General Introduction to the Series by Gaston Boissier, Secretaire Perpetuel de l'Academie Francaise, a Preface to the Novel by Victor Cherbuliez, of the French Academy, and Illustrations by Adolf Lalauze. Ohnet is the only French novelist whose books have a circulation approaching the works of Daudet and of Zola. An admirer of Georges Sand and vehemently opposed to the realistic modern novel, he began a series of novels, Les Batailles de la vie, about a simple and idealistic character. While panned by the critics, it was extremely popular. The series includes this novel, Serge Panine. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
