During the winter of 1927-1928, officials of the United States government conducted a strange and highly secret investigation in the ancient Massachusetts seaport of Innsmouth. The public first became aware of the matter in February, when an enormous series of raids and arrests occurred, followed by the deliberate burning and demolition-under careful precautions-of numerous crumbling and long-abandoned buildings along the waterfront. Many observers dismissed the operation as another campaign against illicit liquor. Yet others wondered at the extraordinary number of arrests, the unusually large force deployed, and the secrecy surrounding the fate of those taken into custody.
The truth behind the events lies in the experiences of a young traveler who visited Innsmouth years earlier while touring the historic towns of coastal New England. What he encountered in the town's decaying streets, shuttered buildings, and strangely altered inhabitants led him into a nightmarish discovery concerning ancient pacts, hidden cults, and creatures from the deepest reaches of the sea.
First published in 1936, The Shadow over Innsmouth is one of H. P. Lovecraft's most famous and influential works. The novella stands at the center of his Cthulhu Mythos and remains one of the defining stories of cosmic horror, blending maritime folklore, forbidden knowledge, and the terrifying suggestion that humanity's origins may not be entirely human.
