Michael Maier [1568-1622] was an eminent physician and philosopher, who wrote extensively on alchemy.

He responded to the appearance of the Rosicrucian manifestos in 1614-15 by defending the Rosicrucian Order from the various attacks and malevolent information distributed against it.

His 'Silentium post clamores' (the silence after the clamour) of 1617 is an in-depth investigation of the supposed Brotherhood, exploring the different views on the Rosicrucians and outlining what information there was available about this mysterious society.
