The murder of a beautiful actress sets the stage for a puzzling mystery combined with escalating action, as master criminologist Christopher Hand and his sidekick-narrator Ralph Clark confront a shadowy criminal gang. The villains' motivation for targeting a wealthy businessman remains murky as Hand and Clark attempt to sort through a range of suspicious characters, until a showdown on a 'haunted island' off the coast of Maine brings the adventure to a dangerous climax.
In spite of the fact that Mr. Page takes familiar material for his story, his adept handling of it results in a story with a distinctive style and with an eye to characterization as well as to plot. The suspense is particularly well maintained until the closing chapter of the book. (1932 review)
Sinister Cargo was published in 1932, the first of five mysteries featuring criminologist Christopher Hand.
