Smoke is a novel written by the Russian author Ivan Turgenev, first published in 1867. It tells the story of a wealthy Russian aristocrat named Irina, who returns to her hometown after living abroad for many years. There, she becomes involved in a love triangle between two men: the idealistic and intellectual Lavretsky and the charming but shallow Potugin. The novel explores themes of love, class, and social change in 19th century Russia. It also provides a satirical commentary on the upper classes and their preoccupations, as well as a critique of the political and social system of the time.
