My Life in the nest with Ray Bradbury was a very special time for me. For two years we shared what was going on in our lives, but we never spoke about writing, and he never taught writing. I never consciously tried to write like Ray but I always, always wrote so that he would be proud of me. The greatest motivation I ever felt was to never, ever write for anyone but myself. I knew that if I was proud of what I had done, he would be proud of me. And no one else really mattered. I can say, with scarcely concealed pride, my articles have seldom been touched by an editor's red pen. Wasn't it Hemingway who said that a writer's top tool was a built-in bullshit detector? Bullshit was really low on Rays' gauge.
