Markus and Ashley (Pippa) who are twins, along with their parents, Jackie and Brian live on top of the Sunshine laundromat in a small town called Jamestown in Northern Ontario. Tawny, Pippa's best friend and neighbour, lives with them. Where they live is not considered the nicest part of Jamestown, but it is the cheapest place to live. One of the central places of Jamestown is the Soup Kitchen where the kids and others hang out.
Pippa had a great summer. Not only are things going well for the family, they are now proud owners of a vehicle call 'The Beast'. A big old orange van. All is going well until Tawny's mother Isabelle goes missing. When the police are contacted, it is discovered that Tawny only stays at the Wallace's. Isabelle is her guardian and with Isabelle gone, now Tawny is listed as an abandoned child. She is removed from the Wallace's and placed in foster care until things can get sorted out.
