Southern Fried Felonies is a collection of short stories by the Southern author, Clay Mercer. The stories run the gamut of Southern Culture (which Mercer would argue is an oxymoron) and involve characters from all walks of life. They range from the affluent to the down and out, from the honest man caught in circumstance to the hustler out for his piece of the pie. Readers familiar with Mercer's books always expect an unexpected plot twist. However, since the short story format precludes the existence of a plot, the curve ball Mercer throws is unusual indeed. All of the stories in Southern Fried Felonies involve a situation with which Mercer was personally familiar. Says Mercer, As long as I could remember, up until the day he died, my father, Joe Mercer, told jokes to everyone he met. Even though I knew all the jokes because I'd heard them all, I developed the habit of telling humorous stories, in the fashion of the comedian Jerry Clower, a former fertilizer salesman. After I retired and began writing, I drew upon those jokes and stories to season my work with a Southern flair, if you will. And because the stories are all based on real circumstances, it was necessary to change the names of the people involved, with one exception. But you'll have to buy the book to find out which one. I like to tell the story of the South. As I've said before, my story isn't Margaret Mitchell's story, or Harper Lee's story, or even the story of the South as told by the late, great Lewis Grizzard. But it is the story of the South today, as it's lived by the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren of the people who settled this land and made it prosper.
