En la temprana primavera de 1914, Stephen Graham se disponÃa a realizar un ambicioso viaje. Tras partir de la ciudad de Vladikavkaz, cruzarÃa el Cáucaso y el mar Caspio para atravesar el Asia central rusa.
Superada la primera etapa en el Cáucaso, Graham recorrió en tren las desiertas extensiones de Transcaspia (donde hoy se ubican Turkmenistán y Uzbekistán), apeándose en las mÃticas ciudades de Samarcanda, Bujará y Tashkent; donde tuvo la oportunidad de visitar varios de los monumentos allà existentes y trabar contacto con los nativos.
Después de varias semanas en esas desérticas tierras, Graham emprendió la segunda etapa del viaje hacia las montañas Altái, que sorprendentemente realizó en su mayor parte a pie, o transportado por carretas. En este recorrido, Graham visitó una diversidad de asentamientos rusos, kazajos y kirguises. El contraste del choque de culturas en estas tierras impactó profundamente a Graham, cuyo testimonio da una idea del conflicto entre los colonos rusos y los habitantes originales de las estepas.
