La vida de Rubén DarÃo escrita por él mismo apareció por primera vez en el semanario argentino Caras y Caretas. Allà se publicó por entregas entre los meses de septiembre y noviembre de 1912. No fue hasta la publicación en forma de libro por el editor Manuel Maucci, en Barcelona en 1915, que apareció bajo el tÃtulo de AutobiografÃa de Rubén DarÃo.
El yo autobiográfico de Rubén DarÃo coincide con el cliché del poeta bohemio y vividor que no se preocupa por el dÃa de mañana. Sus problemas con el alcohol y su afición a los escarceos amorosos son tratados con simpatÃa y sinceridad a lo largo del relato.
Pasaba, pues, mi vida bonaerense escribiendo artÃculos para La Nación, y versos que fueron más tarde mis Prosas profanas; y buscando, por la noche, el peligroso encanto de los paraÃsos artificiales.
En esta AutobiografÃa de Rubén DarÃo, el padre del modernismo es casi coloquial y sarcástico. Su franqueza es absolutra a la hora de mostrar las fronteras entre sus compromisos polÃticos con unas repúblicas endebles (Nicaragua entre ellas) y su vehemencia literaria. No duda en contarnos anécdotas hilarantes sobre polÃticos y artistas.
La vida de Rubén DarÃo escrita por él mismo es una declaración de su identidad literaria hispánica. Al mismo tiempo nos narra la ambigua relación del autor con los poderes polÃticos.
