La AutobiografÃa de Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, es en realidad la primera serie de cartas Ãntimas dirigidas a Ignacio de Cepeda, abogado y escritor.
Las cartas aquà reunidas empiezan el 23 de julio de 1839 y la última que se conserva es del 26 de marzo de 1854.
En su AutobiografÃa, Gómez de Avellaneda relata su vida hasta el momento de la redacción, cuando contaba con veinticinco años de edad. La autora expresa su sentimiento amoroso hacia el mencionado Cepeda y, al mismo tiempo, manifiesta su naturaleza como escritora romántica.
Son cartas Ãntimas dirigidas a un solo destinatario, exigencia que queda patente desde el principio. Avellaneda le implora a su receptor que respete las dos condiciones que manifiesta en su relación epistolar. Primera: que el fuego devore este papel inmediatamente que sea leÃdo. Segunda: que nadie más que usted en el mundo tenga noticia de que ha existido.
Sin embargo, una vez fallecido el destinatario, el catedrático onubense Lorenzo Cruz de Fuentes editó en 1907, por mediación de la viuda de Cepeda, MarÃa de Córdova y Govantes, la colección de cartas de la escritora destinadas a la privacidad. Con ello se hace público lo privado.
