Escrita bajo la impresión de la muerte de Jacobo Gratti, suceso que provocó un duelo colectivo en Madrid. Es la contribución de Tirso de Molina al homenaje sentimental que Madrid dedicó a una de sus más populares figuras.
Gratti, conocido como el Caballero de Gracia, fue un personaje histórico muy popular en Madrid durante el Siglo de Oro. De origen italiano, se estableció en Madrid y adquirió fama como predicador y confesor de la nobleza. En la plaza de Jesús de Medinaceli, en Madrid, se encuentra la Capilla del Caballero de Gracia, construida a instancias de Jacobo Gratti.
