La mayor parte de las Cartas a un escéptico en materia de religión, aparecieron en la revista La Sociedad. En ellas, como anuncia su tÃtulo, se reflexiona sobre la religión y su vigencia en la España del siglo XIX.
En 1843 Jaime Balmes fundó dicha revista en Barcelona, en la que publicó artÃculos sobre las exigencias sociales, polÃticas y religiosas de su tiempo y estas cartas. La primera de ellas empieza como sigue:
Mi estimado amigo: DifÃcil tarea me ha deparado usted en su apreciada, hablándome del escepticismo: éste es el problema de la época, la cuestión capital, dominante, que se levanta sobre todas las demás, cual entre tenues arbustos el encumbrado ciprés. Qué pienso del escepticismo; qué concepto formo de la situación actual del espÃritu humano, tan tocado de esta enfermedad?; cuáles son los probables resultados que ha de acarrear a la causa de la religión? Todo esto quiere usted que le diga; a todas estas preguntas exige usted una respuesta cabal y satisfactoria; añadiéndome que quizás de esta manera se esclarezcan algún tanto las tinieblas de su entendimiento, y se disponga a entrar de nuevo bajo el imperio de la fe.
