El concepto de las creencias es un constructo psicológico complejo. Debido a su naturaleza paradójica y complejidad, las creencias como constructo están plagadas de problemas de definición. Pajares las califica como un constructo complicado. Barcelos describe las creencias como un concepto esquivo que desafÃa una definición clara. A pesar de esta dificultad definitoria, los investigadores han hecho varios intentos para definirlo, por lo que la revisión bibliográfica está repleta de muchas definiciones, aunque hay poco consenso entre los investigadores.
Los investigadores han definido las creencias de manera diferente, dependiendo del enfoque de investigación que adopten. Por lo tanto, Pajares afirma que definir las creencias es, en el mejor de los casos, un juego de elección del jugador. Se han definido como miniteorÃas, percepciones, teorÃas implÃcitas, representaciones del aprendiz, representaciones, etc.. Dentro del enfoque normativo, los estudios definen las creencias como sinónimos de nociones preconcebidas, mitos o malentendidos. Horwitz, figura clave en el enfoque normativo, define las creencias sobre el aprendizaje de idiomas como ideas sobre cómo las personas aprenden un segundo idioma.
Los estudios dentro del enfoque metacognitivo definen las creencias como conocimiento metacognitivo. Wenden ha descrito el conocimiento metacognitivo como conocimiento sobre el aprendizaje. En el enfoque contextual, los estudios consideran las creencias como elementos contextuales, dinámicos y sociales. Pajares sostiene que gran parte de la confusión en la definición se debe a la falta de distinción entre creencias y conocimiento. Las creencias y el conocimiento se han utilizado indistintamente. Es difÃcil precisar dónde termina el conocimiento y comienza la creencia. Las distinciones se discuten con mayor detalle a continuación.
La falta de una distinción clara entre creencias y conocimiento es una de las mayores controversias en los estudios de creencias. Nespor, en su estudio de psicologÃa cognitiva, ha intentado establecer una distinción entre creencias y conocimiento al notar que el conocimiento puede ser evaluado o juzgado de manera consensual, mientras que las creencias no pueden ser evaluadas consensualmente. En otras palabras, el conocimiento se basa en la validez del consenso grupal, lo cual no es aplicable en el caso de las creencias. Los sistemas de creencias dependen más de los componentes afectivos y evaluativos que el sistema de conocimiento.
Los sistemas de creencias están compuestos principalmente por material episódico almacenado que se deriva de experiencias personales, episodios o eventos que continúan influyendo en la comprensión de eventos en un momento posterior. Las creencias residen en la memoria episódica, mientras que el conocimiento está semánticamente almacenado en una red asociativa y podrÃa desglosarse en sus componentes lógicos.
Otros investigadores, sin embargo, no creen que tal distinción sea posible y deseable. Por ejemplo, Pajares sostiene que el conocimiento cognitivo no está exento de su propio componente afectivo y evaluativo. Además, argumenta que la concepción de un conocimiento más puro que la creencia y más cercano a la verdad no es aceptable, porque ningún conocimiento y ninguna verdad pueden existir sin juicio y evaluación.
