En El criterio, obra publicada en 1845, Jaime Balmes ofrece al lector un criterio sencillo, profundo y completo, para dirigir el entendimiento humano a su objeto propio, esto es, al conocimiento de la verdad.
Resulta sorprendente la voluntad de Balmes de construir una teologÃa positiva en diálogo con la ciencia más avanzada de su época.
El criterio es, según su propio autor,
un ensayo para dirigir las facultades del espÃritu humano por un sistema diferente de los seguidos hasta ahora.
Se trata, pues, de un método original y, en sus lÃneas esenciales, indispensable para aprender a pensar bien. Se trata de ejercitar la actividad intelectual, para conocer la verdad y dirigir el entendimiento por el camino que conduce a ella. Balmes muestra en este libro una fe infinita en los métodos de pensamiento y en la capacidad de dotarlos de verdades éticas y humanas.
En los capÃtulos introductorios (I al III), Balmes define qué es el arte de pensar bien, ensalza su trascendencia y fija dos condi-ciones del mismo:
el buen uso de la aten-ción
y la acertada elección de la actividad intelectual, que implica el cabal aprovechamiento de las aptitudes nativas.
El cuerpo de la obra (ca-pÃtulos IV al XXI) contiene un minucioso estudio del entendimiento especulativo. En orden a sus objetos -posibilidad, existencia y naturaleza de las cosas- y en orden a las formas de su actividad, a sus métodos y a sus facultades auxiliares -co-razón e imaginación.
En el capÃtulo XXII y úl-timo, que ocupa casi una tercera parte de la obra, Balmes examina el entendimiento práctico. Muestra la manera de elegir correctamente los objetivos de nuestras acciones y los medios más aptos para alcanzarlos, sin dejarse llevar por las pasiones.
