La autorÃa de La comedia David perseguido y montes de Gelboé, publicada a nombre de Lope de Vega, se cuestionó y solo se le atribuyó, con certeza, a partir de los estudios de finales del siglo XIX y XX. Sin embargo, en los catálogos más antiguos como los de Medel, GarcÃa de la Huerta y Barrera es atribuida a Lope.
El argumento de David perseguido y montes de Gelboe es el mismo de la historia bÃblica y se inicia con la entrada de David en Jerusalén, después de su victoria ante los filisteos. La historia de esta obra sigue con bastante fidelidad los pasajes bÃblicos, especialmente desde:
la llegada de David tras la muerte de Goliat,
la envidia de Saúl y sus persecuciones,
el conflicto con Naval
y el matrimonio con Abigail.
A su vez Lope de Vega introduce una visión peculiar de la Virgen MarÃa y de los ángeles para subrayar la unión entre el MesÃas y David, destacando la conexión entre el Antiguo Testamento y el Nuevo, como era propio en la España tras el Concilio de Trento.
